When Connor McGregor entered the ring for UFC 189 (Ultimate Fighting Championship) in 2015, he did so to the song Foggy Dew, the Irish ballad. It was written in 1919 by Charles O’Neill, a priest from County Antrim. His lyrics are sung to the melody of the Banks of the Mourlough Side, an Irish lament.

He wrote the song in the midst of the war for freedom from the British, and invokes the Easter Rising of 1916, a seminal moment in the independence from the tyranny and brutal rule of London. ..
