At events like Davos it has to lie when it begs, but the strains will become untenable at some stage
SA’s delegation to the World Economic Forum in Davos would probably have taken some heart from team leader and finance minister Enoch Godongwana’s airy dismissal of fears that after taking Israel to the International Court of Justice last week and accusing it of genocide in Gaza, we might not be that welcome at the snowy annual summit in Switzerland.
Our relations with the US, Godongwana said before leaving, were just fine — the US being the chief financial backer of the attacks on Gaza after a murderous incursion into Israel on October 7 by Hamas, the militant group that runs Gaza with Iranian financial support...
