Barack Obama’s presidency of the US, particularly his first term, promised so much. The audacity of hope. The promise of change. But he failed to deliver, and millions of Americans felt left out and left behind. They are sick of Washington and of the establishment. They feel betrayed and they are angry. So angry that, despite Donald Trump’s racism and bigotry and his obvious unsuitability for the Oval Office, substantial numbers of Obama voters either stayed at home or switched to Trump on voting day. Trump’s victory is not just the defeat of Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, it is the trashing of any hope of an Obama legacy.
