RELIGIOUS leaders have come out in support of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in his battle with the Hawks, warning those seeking to "raid" the Treasury and destabilise the rand that they should not "push the people of SA too far". This comes as Gordhan on Wednesday responded to questions in Parliament after his trip to the Group of Twenty (G-20) in China. The National Religious Leaders Council, including Rev Ray McCauley, Pundit Ashwin Trikamjee, Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein and Moulana Ebrahim Bham met Gordhan earlier on Wednesday and agreed with him that he was not above the law. But, the council said there seemed to be a "sinister drive to humiliate, intimidate and embarrass" him. The Hawks had two weeks ago asked Gordhan to present himself at their headquarters for a "warning statement" after concluding their investigation into the alleged "rogue unit" at the South African Revenue Service, dating back to his tenure as commissioner.
