What a revelation by the president on the ports (“Incompetence and lethargy behind Richards Bay port dysfunction, Ramaphosa says”, November 23).

He could have added corruption to make it more accurate. Experts, engineers, economists and business people have been warning for years that Transnet, like most other state-owned enterprises (SOEs), is a disaster in the making. But where were the president/government/ANC during these years?

Were they following their famous ostrich strategy by burying their heads in the sand and hoping the economic disasters would pass miraculously? Was the president focusing too much on his Ankole cattle and stashing away cash received from unsavoury characters, the stench of which simply will not dissipate?

They apparently believe in their own untouchability no matter what happens. But who appointed/deployed these incompetent cadres who, in turn, appointed incompetents? Was the president not head of the ANC’s deployment committee during these unfolding disasters, the minutes of which the governing party is trying to keep secret at all cost?

The reality is that the biggest threat to the wellbeing of SA is the ANC, whose cadres are a weapon of mass destruction. They don't know that they don't know. Yet the same incompetents now plan to address the economic disaster.

Meanwhile, vehicles are piling up at garages for parts that cannot make it through the ports, among many other urgent goods.
