Thuli Madonsela’s dramatic final day in office as public protector was a fitting end to seven years in which she and her office played an increasingly important and huge role in trying to protect SA from corruption and cronyism. On her final day last week, she received notice that President Jacob Zuma and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Des van Rooyen were going to court to interdict her from publishing her report on state capture. And she held a media conference in which she wrapped up her term by reporting back on a string of lower-profile cases. She has frequently said that her most important achievements were those lower-profile cases involving the abuse by public institutions of ordinary people. And her office has done good work on that front. But it is clearly the high-profile cases that will assure the much decorated Madonsela’s place in history.
