Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba has told Parliament that the department had issued more than 680,000 smart ID cards to South Africans of 16 years and older. The department began its campaign of replacing the old identity document book in a roll-out that includes distribution of the smart ID card through the country’s major banks. However, it acknowledged that there were some instances during which it had to distribute ID books instead of smart ID cards. In a letter to Parliament, which was circulated on Thursday in the legislature’s announcements, tabling and committee reports, Gigaba said that, in the current financial period, home affairs issued more than half a million cards.
