Peter Bruce should be careful what he wishes for (“Bid to stop Zuma running was stupid from the start,” April 11).

The Electoral Commission of SA had no choice but to make the ruling it did. The constitution says what it says very clearly. From a purely legal point of view the electoral court’s decision to overturn that ruling was surprising and no reasons were given, so it may still be successfully appealed.

If the decision were based on the remission of Jacob Zuma’s sentence by the president, it has consequences beyond this case. It would mean that in every case where there is reference to a sentence, the sentence handed down by the court may not apply.

I doubt the court would have been unaware of this. The reasons for its ruling are awaited with interest.
