SA HAS plenty of energy professionals, let alone informed citizens, who can understand the realities of energy production in the context of various technologies, each with different profiles of production and cost.I agree that these issues are complex and we should not expect immediate consensus. There are also the externalities of power production, but here at least we do have a growing consensus that vital concerns, such as carbon emissions, the demonstrated cost overrun of nuclear projects, the long-term cost of managing nuclear waste and the environmental effects of renewable technology, should be included in the determination of the energy decisions.I for one am prepared to take an eclectic view on these decisions, provided all the factors are considered. However, given Eskom’s special role we should expect a high degree of transparency and a readiness to engage with the larger community.
