There are two elephants in the room. The first is the Lady R saga and what did/did not happen that December night, how it was handled by the US and whether there will be consequences. The second is Eskom — whether SA’s energy sector can be revived, thereby helping the economy escape from the current chokehold.

While the rhetoric has focused on alleged Russian arms sales and the potential consequences, there are two considerations we need to take into account: SA and the US really do want to be friends, and though there may have been mishaps no-one wants to spoil the relationship; and there are many ways to grow the friendship, but energy security is where the effort and dollars should be. ..
