STUDENT leaders of Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party ended their two-day occupation of University of the Witwatersrand vice-chancellor Adam Habib’s office last night.They were demanding that he allow them to campaign at the campus for the May 7 general election.With just more than a month left before their debut national elections, the EFF was not allowed to lobby for support at Wits because it was not a registered student society.Last night Prof Habib re-opened the registration of all student clubs and societies.He said this decision had been communicated with the student representative council (SRC).The SRC will still, however, decide whether to register the EFF as a student society.Prof Habib said two principles were at stake: freedom of speech and association, and the responsibility of the university to open space for political parties in the context of the upcoming election.There are tensions between supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) and the ...
