The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal says it has been forced to hire bodyguards for its candidates in three ward by-elections scheduled for November 9 after repeated death threats.The by-elections come after three ANC candidates were killed in the weeks before the August 3 local government elections. Bongani Skhosana, an ANC candidate in Umuziwabantu’s ward 1, was shot dead in front of his children, Khanyisile Ngobese-Sibisi, an ANC candidate in Ladysmith’s Alfred Duma Local Municipality was killed on her way to a Mandela Day event, and Thembi Mbongo, another ANC candidate in Newcastle Local Municipality, was shot in front of her husband and children in May.It was too late to remove the candidates on the candidates’ list and all three candidates won their wards, thus forcing a by-election in these wards.Heightened electioneering has begun in the three wards as all parties finalise their candidate lists for the three wards.But so, it seems, has intimidation and death threats.ANC provincial secre...
