IT IS the responsibility of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to ensure a higher number of women in leadership positions in the judiciary, Free State Judge Connie Mocumie said on Monday.Judge Mocumie is the only female candidate of three up for the post of judge president of the Free State division of the High Court. JSC interviews for judicial appointments to various courts are running this week.Currently there is only one female judge president in the country — Judge President of the North West division Monica Leeuw — and one deputy judge president, Jeanette Traverso of the Western Cape division.Judge Mocumie, also president of the South African chapter of the International Association of Women Judges, said Judge Traverso was due to retire in 2016, as were a number of senior female judges.Judge Mocumie, appointed in 2008, is up against her senior colleague Mojalefa Rampai, appointed in 2001, and Judge Khalipi Moloi, who is junior to her, appointed a year before her.
