The motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma failed to pass on Thursday, as widely expected. The ANC used its Parliamentary majority to quash the latest attempt by the opposition to have Zuma removed from office. The office of the ANC chief whip made it clear on Wednesday that its members would not back the motion, saying the motions by the DA have “become ritualistic practices founded on spurious allegations and narrow political motives rather than substance”. A total of 214 MPs voted against the motion, while 126 voted in favour, one abstained and 57 were absent. During a rowdy and often ill-tempered session, opposition MPs pushed hard for voting to be done via a secret ballot, arguing that this would protect ANC MPs who would want to vote in favour of the motion.
