There are many moving and varying parts to the descent of President Jacob Zuma. Never before in post-democratic SA have such varied groupings come together to overturn a president tainted from the start. In the hurly-burly of the battle to end the Zuma presidency, his governing party — the self-proclaimed leader of society — was last to arrive but in the end it delivered the death blow. Unravelling a presidency which developed a strategy aimed at expanding Zuma’s patronage network and entrenching his power and authority over his party and the state has been an arduous task. His grip on both is now lost. It is a grey Friday afternoon in 2016.
