FINANCE Minister Pravin Gordhan says the South African economy must become "agile" and embrace innovation if it is to achieve sustainable growth. Speaking at the BDFM Investment Summit in Sandton on Tuesday, Gordhan said: "How do you do things differently? How do you compete on a global stage? What are the kinds of industries and sectors that would take us into a different era of growth?" He said the Chinese were driving a new innovation agenda for the global economy. "Growth in itself is no longer the panacea. Citizens are becoming impatient with elites, which includes all of us. GDP numbers are in themselves not a reflection of how the benefits of growth are distributed in society."
