The collapse of the Baltimore harbour bridge made for dramatic television (“Governor pleads for federal funding to get Baltimore bridge rebuilt,” April 1).

The loss of life is unfortunate and we give thanks it was not worse. Given the port’s economic importance there is no time to lose in getting things back on track.

A heavy lift barge is required to lift the superstructure off the container ship so that tugs can tow it back to port. The bridge can then be lifted, sectioned and removed.

The sooner the main channel is cleared the sooner the port can be back in business. It’s not rocket science, it’s engineering, and Nick Sloane of Costa Concordia fame is good at it.
