I am concerned about this huge problem with a rowdy bunch of university students, who have disrupted the academic year, severely prejudicing tens of thousands of fellow students who want to study. They have destroyed books, facilities and works of art in the name of some misbegotten notion that college education must be free. Everyone knows that anything that is free is taken for granted, abused and misused. A good tertiary education is a privilege in every country. It is not a right. As a taxpayer I would love to offer a free university education to any student who achieves an average of 80% for whatever courses he or she takes. This is a win-win situation. Students who work hard and achieve results get free education. Anyone who ever received a bursary knows it was predicated on a certain level of performance academically. A government bursary of this type would benefit the country by producing high-quality graduates who can find real employment. Dr Peter BakerParktown North
