Is entrepreneurship support the answer to poverty? It’s part of the answer, but that’s rather like asking whether fertiliser is the solution to hunger. It helps, but lots has to happen to convert fertiliser into food and put food in mouths. Similarly, there are many factors that contribute to people moving out of poverty.

The Greenlight Office, a really interesting nonprofit based in the Cape that describes itself as “a movement from poverty and dependency towards independence and dignity in SA,” takes a holistic view. It has identified 50 indicators of poverty grouped into six dimensions: income & employment, health & environment, housing & infrastructure, education & culture, organisation & participation, and interiority & motivation. ..
