Readers of this column will know that I am not given to flights of lyricism and unqualified enthusiasm. Rare indeed are the occasions when I allow aesthetic delight to trump political considerations and the ideological affectations that come with being (to put it bluntly) white and woke.  

If memory serves, three such occasions over the years were spurred by experiences at the Orient Hotel in the Francolin Conservancy outside Pretoria. The Orient was unique: a combination of opulence and careful attention to detail made it quite a remarkable place to visit. Travelling there became an artistic pilgrimage of sorts. ..
