Last week Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu informed South Africans that he had recalled a team auditing the eThekwini Municipality due to death threats. This followed a report tabled by the auditor-general in Parliament that said South African municipalities blew more than R28.4bn on fruitless and wasteful expenditure in the past financial year. The violent threats and actual killing of black professionals in the past year has increased sharply. The violent death of a professional such as Basis Points Capital CEO Vusi Mhlanzi hits a nerve. So does a threat.
