Never before have so many of the leaders of Group of Seven (G-7) nations given keynote speeches at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos in a single year. Never before have six out of the seven heads of states trooped off to the WEF meeting, and that’s not even to mention Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian president Michel Temer. What’s going on here? Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and, of course, US President Donald Trump have presented, or will present, keynote addresses at the 2018 event. How Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe missed out is hard to fathom. Brazil is back, said Temer. France is back, said Macron, Zimbabwe is back, said Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
