The Cape Town City Council was thrown into further chaos on Monday after the resignation of long-serving manager Achmat Ebrahim, who has been implicated in covering up alleged irregularities. Mayor Patricia de Lille and other senior managers, including Ebrahim, have faced allegations of corruption and maladministration in recent months. De Lille is suspected of having acted improperly in the reappointment of Ebrahim in 2016 by unduly influencing members of the selection panel. The city manager is largely responsible for the city’s operations and implementing policies adopted by the leaders.
