The Malema-esque turnaround by ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu is reflective of a deep-rooted disenchantment with the century-old governing party. Coincidentally, both were part of the gravy train, and having had an overdose of sorts, turned their individual moral compasses and became "renegades". That it took nearly a quarter of a century to throw in the dirty, dishonest towel — after rampant looting under their watch — shows the sheer arrogance of a party whose mandate was to give "a better life for all" but instead skimmed the Treasury, thinking it was their right to do so, and be unaccountable. The democratic process of this very same organisation and it being enshrined in a world-class constitution ensured that the long arm of the law would prevail. Mthembu’s call for the party leadership to take the fall and resign is one of the most forthright pleas to come out of the revolutionary establishment. AR ModakRobertsham
