The trouble with writing this column the day before it is published is that things can change, and if the more zealous corners of American social media have been proved right and the Rapture took place on Monday, with evangelicals blasting off this planet like millions of chipolatas fired out of a cannon, things might have changed in a very big way indeed. 

Even if you are still here, you probably have far bigger concerns than reading newspaper columns, like trying to figure out the implications of being left behind and the etiquette around looting the homes of the recently raptured. It’s one thing being formally branded a sinner, but one still has standards and no-one wants to be seen dragging their neighbour’s drinks cabinet into their garage before a suitable period of introspection has passed. ..
