Are you a criminal? Most readers of Business Day will, presumably — it is hoped — answer no. But not so fast. According to the outcome of a YouGov poll conducted in the UK, while you may not have thought of yourself as a criminal before, that could change when so-called "micro-crime" is taken into account. About 74% of people questioned in the poll confessed to being guilty of at least one such micro-crime, whether it be fibbing about your age to get a better deal or downloading a pirated television series. According to the poll, these are the most common tiny crimes committed by three-quarters of the British — at least the ones they’re prepared to own up to: Paid someone a discounted amount in cash, knowing the recipient won’t pay tax (43%). • Streaming pirated TV programmes, films or music (28%). • Downloading pirated TV programmes, films or music (25%). • Avoiding paying the fare on public transport (24%). • Ordering cheaper takeaway food then eating it at a table (22%). • Lying ...
