YOU have to admire the 101 ANC stalwarts (for that is how they will be known, henceforth) for  their political savvy and unvarnished opportunism in challenging President Jacob Zuma, but if you’re seduced by their supposedly principled stand, you would be a fool. The fact is the 101 are loyal members of the ANC. In the first paragraph of their statement to the media declaring for beleaguered Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, they say: "We remain devoted to the principles and values that have been the hallmark of the ANC for over 100 years, values that are encapsulated in the constitution of our country and the Freedom Charter." That must mean they are loyal to the principles and mechanisms that subject the interests of the country to the interests of the party. The ANC has demonstrated — since long before the Zuma presidency — that party trumps country. President Jacob Zuma has told us so, and we believe him. The Stalwarts must mean also that they approve of the erosion of our freedom...
