PETER BRUCE: Probe into banks’ move on Guptas would clear the air
IF YOU think the past two weeks in South African politics have been, like, just unbelievable, remember that President Jacob Zuma hasn’t even been in the country. Wait until he gets back. But is he back? Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane will be pleased when he is. His attempt to colour a Gupta-designed inquiry into the commercial banking industry’s abandonment of his other employer as a Cabinet decision exploded in his face. But uBaba will make all the trouble go away. It’ll be easy. The fact is that in the uproar that followed Zwane’s ham-fisted attempt to save the Guptas we missed a trick. An inquiry into the details of how the decisions by the banks to stop doing business with the Guptas is perfectly possible. All you need is to respect that the banks cannot disclose details of their relationship with a client.
