The National Assembly has formally approved the ratification of the COP21 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Eighty-seven countries have ratified the agreement out of 197 parties to the convention, which aims fight climate change. The agreement, which was adopted in December 2015, represents the first time that all countries in the world are united under one international treaty to address climate change. The National Assembly debated the adoption of the agreement on Tuesday. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) SA’s CEO Dr Morné du Plessis said there was "incredible urgency" to act on climate change. "By ratifying this global agreement within one year of its negotiation, SA continues to show its leadership on the international stage and ensures that its voice will be heard as governments pursue further discussions at the upcoming 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention," Du Plessis said.
