SOUTH African Coal Holdings is the latest miner to face labour unrest, after mineworkers represented by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at its Umlabu colliery in Mpumalanga went on a protected strike following a wage dispute.Although the strike is protected, this makes the company the third coal miner, after Coal of Africa (CoAL) and Petmin, to be have its operations disrupted by the wave of labour unrest that has swept across South Africa’s mining industry.A total of 56 people are employed at the mine, and the NUM obtained certification from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to down tools.South African Coal Mining chief financial officer David Miller said the production of about 30,000 tons of run-of-mine in coal was lost as a result of the strike.Mr Miller said although workers had not fully articulated their wage demands, management intended to engage with the union to find a resolution when both parties met on Friday."We gave them an offer a mont...
