In a dramatic turn of events, Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has thrown in the towel and will leave the power utility on January 1. In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the Eskom boss attacked former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture, which had sketched a damning picture of his suspected close ties with the Gupta family. Molefe said he had to step down in the interests of the utility and the public. “I wish to reiterate that this is not an admission of wrongdoing on my part,” Molefe said. “It is rather what I feel to be the correct thing to do on the interests of the company and good corporate governance.” Molefe will leave Eskom on January 1 2017.
