AFTER a marathon day of interviews on Monday, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) announced it had recommended Free State High Court judges Connie Mocumie and Christiaan Van der Merwe to be appointed justices of the Supreme Court of Appeal.The announcement was made just after 1am on Tuesday morning, after the JSC decided to bring forward the interviews for the Supreme Court of Appeal — scheduled for Tuesday — so that the MPs who sit on the JSC could attend Parliament's impeachment proceedings.The two Free State judges had pleasant interviews, especially Mr Van der Merwe, who was the last candidate to be interviewed — after 11pm — and who had been interviewed by the JSC for the appeal court before.Supreme Court of Appeal President Lex Mpati began his interview by joking that because of his surname, he tended to be the last candidate to be interviewed, which sometimes meant shorter interviews.During his interview, Judge Van der Merwe said he would contribute extensive commercial law...
