FOUR people were injured, two seriously, in violent labour strife at Sibanye Gold’s Cooke mines near Randfontein, which led to the closure of three shafts on Monday and contributed to a fall in the share price of SA’s largest domestic gold producer.The Cooke mines are not a key part of Sibanye’s operations and were part of a package deal with Gold One to acquire enormous tailings dumps.Sibanye is busy with a process to shut its Cooke 4 shaft. The unprotected labour stoppage was triggered by unhappiness around union membership verification at the other three shafts in the Cooke complex.Four employees were attacked by unidentified assailants early on Tuesday, with two admitted to hospital with serious injuries, Sibanye said."Despite management engaging with the unions, a group of employees embarked on illegal protest action during the night shift on Monday," it said.Sibanye CEO Neal Froneman said the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) led the labour action."We … ...
