That SA will emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic poorer is certain. What is not certain is what policymakers could and should do about it.

The huge hit to GDP this year — consensus is now about -8% — and the prospect of load-shedding and tepid growth for the next two years, mean it will be five years before SA’s GDP is back to 2019 levels, calculations by Absa economist Peter Worthington show.
