As the University of the Witwatersrand prepared to open under the watchful eye of the police on Monday‚ it was the dogs they brought with them that had many talking on social media. Many students took to Twitter seemingly shocked that members of the SAPS’ K9 Unit had been deployed on the campuses. @sifiso790 seemed incredulous‚ and commented: "Poor students ask for free education and you bring the dog’s out on them #Wits #witsshutdown #FeesMustFall2016". @BMathandela thought it could not end well: "Things are going to get messy at Wits. K9 dogs on campus. #Wits". There was a heavy presence of police and private security personnel on campus as the university prepared to restart of its academic programme.
