President Jacob Zuma has nominated the deputy president of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), Justice Mandisa Maya, to head the court. Maya will be the first woman president of the Supreme Court. She replaces Justice Lex Mpati, who retired in May last year. According to the Constitution, the president of the Supreme Court is appointed by the president of the country, in consultation with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). In 2015 Maya was appointed the first deputy president of the court. Presidency spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga said on Monday that Zuma had informed the chairperson of the JSC and Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng about his decision. "We wish Justice Maya all the best as the selection process unfolds," Zuma said. Maya was appointed an acting judge of the high court in 1999 and a full-time judge the following year. She has acted as a judge in the Labour Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.
