THE South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has injected R30m into Stellenbosch University’s Department of Civil Engineering.The money will be used to fund the Sanral chair in pavement engineering at the university.Established in 2001 with financial support from Sanral, the academic programme is committed to the development of human capital in the field of pavement engineering. This is the study of the performance of road "surface" materials and structural considerations for road paving.Sanral Western region manager Kobus van der Walt said: "We don’t just invest in building roads and bridges but also in our communities."He said in 2008 the road agency launched a programme which to date had offered scholarships to 192 pupils and bursaries to 108 students at eight of SA’s leading universities.Sanral also provides internships to engineering students, ands mentorship support to bursary holders.This enabled it to meet the widening skills gap within the field of pavement engineering,...
