Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor, Mongameli Bobani, has been removed through a motion of no confidence, the metro’s mayor Athol Trollip said on Thursday. The motion against Bobani, who is a member of the UDM, was tabled by the Patriotic Alliance’s Marlon Daniels, and received the backing of 60 councillors from the 119 present at a council meeting. However, there is a dispute on the matter, as Bobani told Business Day that he is still deputy mayor, saying the motion did not get 61 votes, which would be 50% plus one of the total number of the 120 seats in the council. Besides, Bobani said, he did not believe there was a credible vote as the UDM, EFF, ANC and African Independent Congress (AIC) walked out of the council meeting on Thursday.
