The use of the titlehonourable member for MPs in parliament must be withdrawn. The term is intended to refer to the honourable qualities of members of the house. It is meant to refer to their integrity and honesty. The candidate list submitted by the ANC for the coming elections includes people who should not be permitted to grace parliament. They are clearly unfit and first need to clear their names of wrongdoing. They should not be allowed the cover of “innocent until proven guilty”. There is a tradition from which the term honourable originates, which says falling on your sword is the appropriate course of action to retain the honour of the house. You do not bluff your way into parliament until your hands are shown to be clean. The excusing of corruption and other sinister evils in our politics and our public “service” is too much.
