While many civic organisations and individuals contributed to the collapse of Gauteng’s contentious gantry toll road system, most credit should go to Wayne Duvenhage, who through his Outa organisation doggedly petitioned for it to be declared unacceptable. The government’s decision to forego past debt incurred due to nonpayment of the tolls is a victory for the many users of the system, which was introduced amid great controversy as it was launched without consultation. The victory puts an end to one of SA’s most famous petitions and is proof that people power can sway many unfavorable laws, which can be contested in a land beset with an array of bylaws and levies that have impacted the lives of low earners. This victory should give hope to a nation now battling a government that for a quarter of a century has wasted great opportunities to make this Africa’s best country, economically and politically, as well as free and fair for all who reside here.
