SA’s Caster Semenya again stunned the world at the weekend with a resounding win in the 800m during the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships in London. The victory comes just days after she took bronze in the women’s 1,500m race at the same event. Semenya, Wayde van Niekerk, Luvo Manyonga and Ruswahl Samaai represent SA’s finest athletic potential and should serve as inspiration in terms of how we develop and nurture young sporting talent. To build that talent, though, the government has to become serious about the provision of sports facilities across all communities. It has to allow young people the necessary exposure to the sporting code of their choice. The question is, how serious is the government about this?
