Nelson Mandela’s greatness was reflected in his humility and his servant spirit. He always regarded the cause as bigger than himself and respected others regardless of their race, culture and religious or political affiliation. In my limited interaction with this global icon, his complete focus on others was his greatest attribute — it reflected a man at peace with himself and the world around him. This attribute enabled him to put himself in the shoes of others and to seek forgiveness rather than revenge. He understood that we were all in a sense victims of an oppressive system and mental slaves of generations of indoctrination. He therefore focused on nation-building: breaking down artificial barriers between our people and building bridges across deep divisions in our society. We should never forget how different it could have been if we had not had a leader of his stature at such a critical juncture of our history.
