It feels odd to temper the enthusiasm over the future of a rugby union team representing SA’s economic heartland by voicing financial concerns, but sadly that was what went through the mind after the Lions’ unexpected but excellent win over the Bulls at the weekend.

One swallow definitely doesn’t make a summer and it was the Lions’ first Rainbow Cup win in four starts. Any thoughts of them winning the competition being held as a prelude to SA’s entry into what will become the PRO16 later in 2021 would be fanciful...
