When picking out newly elected president Cyril Ramaphosa’s imaginary wardrobe, the first of many coats the enchanted bestowed upon him was that of great business experience. They were encouraged by business itself, its leaders no less enthralled by the prospect of having one of their own at the helm. Here was a man, they said, at one with the private sector, of the private sector — a billionaire no less — who understands the way the private sector thinks.

The following sentiment was typical of the mood: “A quick glance at Ramaphosa’s CV shows he’s the right person for the job. He boasts vast business experience in his own right, aside from his service on the boards of some of SA’s largest corporates.”..
