The grand opening of the £1bn Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday night was big news in England. It was splashed across all the major dailies, from every angle: the win over Palace, the food on sale, the dire public transport, the bottom-up beer dispensers and the 17,500-seater South Stand for the home fans. It felt like the sports writers had been waiting for this stadium almost as much as the fans and players of Spurs. The Times headlined their match report: “Son Heung-min provides spark as Spurs rejoice in country’s finest stadium;” the Guardian went with: “Astonishing new stadium brings hope and fear to Tottenham Hotspur;” “Awe and excitement as Tottenham fans step into a future that already feels like home,” rolled the Telegraph.
