Last week I was privileged to host Prof Sary Levy-Carciente from the Venezuelan Academy of Economic Sciences. The visit would not have come at a better time for her, given the challenges her country is facing, including hyperinflation, shortages of key essentials, a brain drain and the exodus of Venezuelans into Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia. Levy-Carciente shared with me how the Chavez plan has been fast evaporating under President Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuela and the hardship it has brought along. Having heard about SA’s proposed land expropriation without compensation she was impressed by how South Africans were openly sharing their views on the matter.
