Newspaper billboards around Durban on the eve of the Rugby Championship Test at Kings Park proclaimed "Bok and Sharks fever" was sweeping the city. If that was really the case, remind me not to go to Durban for a rugby international when there isn’t rugby "fever" running. If the interest got any more underwhelming everyone would fall asleep. Some estimated a crowd of 25,000 but that might have been an exaggeration. It looked closer to 20,000 and there was little atmosphere to speak of heading into the Kings Park precinct before kick-off. It has been thus for a while in Durban, with the 2017 Currie Cup final being played in front of only a partially populated stadium, and cricket Test matches in the city haven’t exactly been supported in their droves either. Perhaps the advice of one wit should be taken seriously — limit big sports events in KwaZulu-Natal to the Durban July and Comrades Marathon.
