So, the wacky days of watching the Bafana Bafana captain’s armband being passed around like a worn-out R10 note are over. It’s hard to believe, given that former Bafana coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba trivialised the captaincy to such an extent it was only a matter of time before he awarded the thing to the ball boys. Hell, the man once told an incredulous gallery that the duty of a captain was to attend the coin toss and tell the players which side of the field they would be playing from. Indeed, the armband was rotated so many times in the 28 months Mashaba was at the helm that its value had diminished considerably by time the South African Football Association (Safa) told him to take a hike in December 2016.
