The People’s Assembly against State Capture at St Albans Cathedral on Wednesday was a broad church occasion in every sense, with some quite unlikely allies in the cause. Among them were business activists who had been transported to the protest with their bodyguards, who had a little reunion of their own since most know each other from past assignments. Also in the throng were quite a number of senior Treasury officials, some in Save SA T-shirts, waving Save our Treasury placards. They had parked at the Treasury’s offices down the road – but made it clear to anyone who would listen that they had taken leave for the day. There were a few South African Revenue Service (SARS) folk too, one brave enough to be wearing his customs service uniform. But the best story of the day concerned a SARS official who, though suspended according to the gossip mill, had duly applied for leave for the day, giving as the reason "attending assembly against state capture".
