THE Cannes Lions awards represent the best advertising from around the world. It is the highlight in any advertising calendar, and in this award show, it’s no longer just a battle between agencies, but a battle between nations.This year, nine South Africans have been invited to judge the awards at Cannes, France, and I am honoured to be one of them. The judging process began a few weeks ago and it’s quite a gruelling, yet fascinating task.In total, there are about 40,000 entries from across the world.In the first round, the judges are asked to score each piece of work in their category on a scale of one to nine to determine if the piece is a short-list candidate. In the second round, the judges will review whether the work in the provisional short list is worthy of being short-listed only, a possible winner, or a definite winner.In the final rounds, the judges are asked to determine, along with the guidance of the jury president, to vote and debate whether the work is worth a bronze...
